Ship 3001

The Poughkeepsie Yacht Club sponsors Sea Scout Ship 3001 “Sea Odyssey” to bring together young adults and boating. Sea Scouts is for girls and boys ages 14-21 (13 if graduated 8th grade).

No prior boating experience is needed, just a desire to learn about boats and boating. Before they board a boat, the members of Ship 3001 complete a safe boating course such as the United States Power Squadrons’ ABC course.

The ship’s crew experience all sizes of boating from kayaks up beyond 30 footers, both sail and power. Beginning with afternoon-long trips, the ship will build to multiple day cruises up and down the Hudson River, New York Harbor, and Long Island Sound. During the cooler months, the ship will explore the rich nautical tradition of the northeast by land.

While spending time aboard, the scouts will learn all about actually owning a boat. Topics such as engine maintenance, marine electronics, boat care, and trailering (for scouts with a driver’s license) will be covered along with rules of the road, weather, navigation, and safety aboard.
