The Poughkeepsie Yacht Club is a small-to-medium
(120 active and joint-active memberships) club, located in the heart
of the scenic Hudson Valley, on a quiet and beautiful part of the
Hudson River about halfway between New York City and Albany. The
club offers both docks and moorings to members, and has both docks
and moorings available to transients. Our clubhouse and grounds
have recently undergone extensive renovations. The clubhouse is
now air-conditioned and has upper and lower decks looking out onto
the river. Among our other facilities are showers, dockside electricity
and water, a well-stocked bar and satellite TV. A 25-ton travel
lift is on the grounds for emergency haul-out and repair. The club
welcomes both sailors and power boaters; currently we have about
60 powerboats and 48 sailboats in our membership.
Although our name (Poughkeepsie)
comes from our origins in the late 19th century (founded in 1892),
we are presently located in Staatsburg New York, on historic Route
U.S. 9. Nearby attractions include the Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Hyde Park home, library and museum, the Eleanor Roosevelt home,
the Vanderbilt estate and grounds (including hiking trails), the
Ogden Mills estate, Norrie state park, and the Culinary Institute
of America. We are also not far from the lovely village of Rhinebeck,
a popular weekend retreat for New Yorkers with excellent restaurants
and a variety of shops.
The Poughkeepsie Yacht Club is a working
club, and all members take part in all our activities. Members are
expected to devote 50 hours per year to club activities, which include
the major all-hands activities of docks in and docks
out as well as more mundane activities such as bartending, housekeeping,
serving at parties, dock repair, grounds keeping and many others,
according to talent and interest. In fact, 50 hours goes very quickly,
and many members find that they have accumulated quite a few extra
hours at the end of the year. Members may choose the committee with
which they wish to be affiliated (docks, membership, house, grounds,
moorings, entertainment, etc.). After ten years membership,
the required hours drops to 25 per year. Club general membership
meetings are held monthly on the first Monday of the month, and
all are encouraged to attend.
